How long is the Pine Creek Rail Trail? Click HERE for a Pine Creek Trail map There are a total of 62 miles currently open. Part I (Wellsboro Junction to Ansonia) is 8 miles long and goes through very scenic wetlands with varied fauna and waterfowl. Part II (Ansonia to Rattlesnake Rock) is 19 miles long and goes right through PA’s Grand Canyon. Part III (Rattlesnake Rock to Waterville) is 22.5 miles long and passes by several small villages. Part IV (Waterville to Jersey Shore) is 15.2 miles long.
How much time does it take to ride the trail? The most popular section is the Canyon portion. It takes most people about 2.5 to 3.5 hours (one way) to ride the 17 mile section through the canyon (Ansonia to Blackwell). Or you can just ride down as far as you feel comfortable and then turn around and ride back if you don‘t want to go the whole way.
For those hearty souls who go farther, the average time for the stretch from Ansonia to Waterville (40+ miles) has been about 6.5 hours (one way). A few go the whole 62 miles to Jersey Shore - usually taking 8 hours or more, depending on your fitness level.
What’s the trail like? It is crushed limestone on top of an old rail bed, providing a very firm surface to ride on. Wide tires work best, but are not required. The trail is basically flat (no more than 3% grade) and follows the bottom of the canyon next to Pine Creek. Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the trail.
There are restrooms located about every 10 miles or so. The main parking areas for the Canyon portion are Darling Run (off Rt 362 near Ansonia) and Rattlesnake Rock (2 miles south of Blackwell on Rt 414). There are large parking lots at other points south such as Slate Run, Waterville (1 mile north of the village), Torbert (at the former Whitetail Campground property), and Jersey Shore.
How does your shuttle service work? ALL SHUTTLES MUST BE PRE-ARRANGED. It is helpful if you call us several days in advance to schedule. We are located in Ansonia near the northern end of the trail. Most folks start their ride in Ansonia and have us meet them at a pre-arranged time at Blackwell or Rattlesnake Rock. The ride back from Blackwell takes about 45 minutes. Shuttles from points further south (e.g. Slate Run, Waterville, Torbert, etc.) can also be arranged. |
