· It is floatable on occasion in July and August but generally only on short notice following a very hard rain or if there is a sustained rainy period. · It is generally rated as a Class I – II+ stream punctuated by some III– rapids. · At medium water levels the canyon portion is considered by most guidebooks to be suitable for novice rafters and intermediate-level canoeists. |

“Good” water level is subjective and depends on YOUR skill level. However, in general, the minimum level reading for a canoe trip through the Canyon section is 1.8 ft (rafts should have 2.3). For the Canyon, between 2.5 and 3.5 ft is considered “good” by most boaters (rafters & intermediate-level canoeists & kayakers). Above that is considered even better rafting but aggressive for some canoeists (depends on your skill and experience). At 6.0 ft the river is very full and above 6.5 ft starts to flood over its banks. NOTE: Always check water level before putting on, especially if the weather has been volatile (e.g. a heavy rain the night before). Canoeists & kayakers in particular must consider their level of skill relative to the level and volume of water. If you aren’t sure of the water level or your skill level, check at our office or with the Bureau of Forestry, Tioga State Forest. |
